The UK IGBP National Committee is a working group of the Royal Society's
Global Environmental Research Committee (GERC) with responsibility for
UK contributions to and interests in the International Geosphere-Biosphere
Programme (IGBP). The Committee is Chaired by Mr John Ingram (Oxford University).
IGBP is an international research programme
formed in 1987 to study the phenomenon of global change; its vision is:
to provide scientific knowledge to improve
the sustainability of the living Earth
IGBP studies the interactions between
biological, chemical and physical processes and human systems, and collaborates
with other programmes to develop and impart the understanding necessary
to respond to global change. The research goals of IGBP are:
to analyse (i) the interactive physical,
chemical and biological processes that define Earth System dynamics; (ii)
the changes that are occurring in these dynamics; and (iii) the role of
human activities in these changes.
The Committee meets twice a year and
has up to 12 members selected from the UK science community to represent
the interests of the different IGBP programme elements. The Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC) is also represented as the UK's primary funder
for IGBP related research.
